Services for Secondary Schools Education Groups

Topics relating to a range of disciplines can be included in a visit with subject matter relevant to courses relating to:

The Estate Office and Information Centre in Tomintoul is available for groups and can accommodate up to 40 persons, with resources for slide talks, presentations discussions and evening work. A CD-ROM with detailed information about the management of the estate is also available. Half day, one day, or longer residential study tours can be catered for. Good quality accommodation (www.highland-holidays-scotland.co.uk) in local farmhouse bed and breakfast establishments, self-catering cottages, guest houses and hotels can be arranged if required for residential visits. Food (ie. packed lunches and evening meals) can also be arranged separately depending on requirements.

There is considerable scope for practical field based projects and a number of activities can be arranged including site visits to study:

  • Multiple-use forest areas
  • Commercial plantations
  • Working forest machinery
  • Birch woodland conservation management schemes
  • Hill farms
  • Diversified farm projects
  • Conservation management projects
  • Other rural businesses
  • Interpretive displays and signs
  • Integrated recreational land use
  • Historical / archeological sites
  • Sites of ecological interest / Sites of Special Scientific Interest
  • The Cairngorm reindeer herd based in Glenlivet
  • Lecht downhill ski centre
  • The Glenlivet Distillery Visitor Centre

Qualified, experienced staff will guide your visit. Speakers from other agencies such as the Cairngorms National Park can also be arranged and resources and facilities are available for:

  • Evaluative/monitoring studies.
  • Practical exercises on forest or estate management involving field surveys and the preparation of management plans.
  • Individual student fieldwork ie. preparation of dissertations and other project work
  • Outdoor activities including hillwalking, mountain biking and skiing
